It is with great sadness and a deep sense of loss that we at Young, Gifted & Green mourn the passing of our beloved sister, elder, and now ancestor Assata Shakur. As an activist, author, and revolutionary, Assata’s life was a testament to the power of resistance and the unwavering commitment to fighting for justice and human rights.
Assata’s legacy is one of courage, resilience, and unapologetic advocacy for the marginalized and oppressed. Her work, both in and out of prison, inspired generations of activists, artists, and freedom fighters to take up the mantle of struggle against systemic racism, state violence, and social injustice.
As a Black Liberation Movement icon, Assata’s story is inextricably linked to the histories of resistance and rebellion that have shaped our collective fight for freedom. Her autobiography, Assata: An Autobiography, has become a classic in the literature of social justice, offering a searing indictment of the carceral system and a powerful exploration of the intersections of racism, sexism, and classism.
At Young, Gifted & Green, we are committed to carrying forward Assata’s vision of a world where Black people, women, and all marginalized communities are free from state violence, exploitation, and oppression. We honor her memory by continuing to organize, mobilize, and advocate for a more just and equitable society.
Rest in power, Assata. Your legacy will continue to inspire and guide us as we strive for a world where all people can live with dignity, respect, and freedom.
