Washington, DC–Young, Gifted & Green celebrates the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recent announcement of the New Light Vehicle Standard making it the strongest standard in history for cars!

Young, Gifted & Green champions environmental justice and advocates for sustainable practices that protect both our planet and the communities disproportionately affected by legacy pollution. Recognizing the urgent need to combat climate change, we believe that the EPA’s new light vehicle standard is a significant step forward in achieving a cleaner, greener future.

“As a public health advocate and professional, ensuring that agencies like the EPA implement these standards is a top priority. Our future depends on protection from air pollutants, job insecurity, and unmanageable family costs.  We must be prepared to tackle climate through environmental assessment, properly monitoring policies meant to uphold quality assurance, and training adequate amounts of professionals to manage such issues, especially within frontline communities. Standards like the EPA’s New Light Duty Vehicle Standard are a step towards the right direction. As they remain significant for securing a promising livelihood in reference to the economy, human life, and much more.”

Jada Robinson, University of Michigan-Flint | Vice President of the Public Health Student Organization

The new standard serves as a powerful tool to address the transportation sector’s significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. By establishing stricter fuel efficiency and emission requirements for light vehicles, this regulation will undoubtedly pave the way for a more sustainable transportation system, reducing air pollution and carbon emissions, and mitigating the impacts of climate change. We commend the EPA for prioritizing equity and environmental justice within the framework of the new standard. Historically, low-income communities and communities of color have borne the brunt of pollution-related health risks due to proximity to highways and major transportation corridors. By mandating cleaner and more efficient vehicles, the EPA is taking a crucial step towards addressing these disparities and ensuring a fairer distribution of the benefits of environmental protection. We are particularly pleased to see the EPA’s commitment to engaging with stakeholders, including environmental justice organizations, to shape and refine these regulations. Young, Gifted & Green looks forward to actively participating in these discussions and collaborating with the EPA to ensure that the voices of marginalized communities are heard and their concerns are addressed.

As a Gen Z climate advocate deeply rooted in the Flint community and a trusted leader, I wholeheartedly endorse the EPA’s new light-duty vehicle standard. This initiative signifies a crucial step towards cleaner air, greater consumer choice, and real savings for families in Michigan and all over the country. By prioritizing emissions reductions and encouraging the transition to zero-emission vehicles, we’re not only safeguarding public health but also empowering frontline communities disproportionately affected by pollution. This standard is not a ‘job killer’ but a lifeline for a state where childhood asthma rates are nearly double the national average in Black, Brown, and low-income communities due to industrial pollution. Let’s seize this moment to drive progress, protect our environment, and ensure a brighter, more equitable future for all.

We firmly believe that the EPA’s new light vehicle standard will not only drive innovation and technological advancements within the automotive industry but also foster economic growth and job creation in the clean energy sector. By embracing sustainable transportation practices, we can simultaneously protect the environment, improve public health, and bolster our economy. Young, Gifted & Green wholeheartedly supports the EPA’s new light vehicle standard and commends the agency for its commitment to combating climate change, promoting environmental justice, and securing a sustainable future for all. We stand ready to collaborate and work hand-in-hand with the EPA and other stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation and enforcement of these regulations.
