Washington, DC–While folks have been throwing shade at our good sis, and my soror (Shout out to all the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.) for not showing up, my Vice President showed up TUH-DAY in the White House…the same place where America’s “forefathers” enslaved Black men and women. Today, some of the most powerful and influential people in the country discussed the fact that Black childbirthing people are the most disproportionately impacted by environmental racism such as lead poisoning leading to premature pregnancies, and most devastating, miscarriages like the horrific experiences of our family in Flint, MI.

Black Women, we cannot let this moment be co-opted by white supremacists disguised as white feminists.  The Reproductive Justice Movement which greatly influences Maternal Health was started by BLACK WOMEN IN CHICAGO!  While we, Black Women, are the most detrimentally impacted, our organizations that work tirelessly to preserve and protect Black births are severely underfunded especially in comparison to white-led organizations. While this summit is a step in the right direction, until we (Black people) see equity in the childbirthing experience…until African Americans stop dying by the hundreds and thousands giving birth in a hospital where healthcare professionals see the color of our skin and their implicit bias kicks in and determines we can “handle excruciating pain because we’re Black”, we cannot stop here.  This is only the beginning for the liberation of Black and Brown Wombs.

We are grateful for the phenomenal accomplishments of VP and former US Senator Kamala Harris, Representative Lauren Underwood, Representative (AND DOCTOR…PUT SOME RESPECT ON HER NAME) Alma Adams, and a host of other Black-Woman electeds (shout out to State Representative London Lamar hailing from the State of Tennessee) and unbossed and unapologetically BLACK organizations like SisterSong, SisterReach, Revive Community Health Center, MOMCares Baltimore, Mamatoto Village, Ancient Doula Song, California Black Women’s Health Project, National Association to Advance Black Birth, Black Mamas Matter Alliance…so many who have tirelessly navigated through America’s white dominated and patriarchal system of oppression fighting for the dignity and humanity of Black mamas and Black babies.

I hope that Black childbirthing people had the mental capacity to celebrate today, as the trauma of white supremacy, misogynoir, and patriarchy invade our wombs every single day. It’s a crying shame that people with a penis are making decisions about our uteruses and ovaries! Nevertheless, let’s continue fighting the good fight, sistas!
