On behalf of Young, Gifted & Green, it is with profound sadness that we express our deepest condolences on the passing of Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva. His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and the environment has left an indelible mark on our communities and our nation.

Congressman Grijalva was not only a fierce advocate for Southern Arizona but also a champion for the marginalized and underrepresented. His legacy of fighting for climate action, health care access, and the rights of immigrant families, resonates deeply with the values we uphold at Young, Gifted & Green. He understood that the health of our planet is intertwined with the health of our communities, and he worked tirelessly to ensure that every voice was heard. Congressman Grijalva was also a champion for youth and young adults. When Young, Gifted & Green first started nearly a decade ago, he was one of the first legislators who truly listened to “Black and Brown Kids”. Our first engagement with Congressman Grijalva was during his work to introduce the historical Environmental Justice for All Act when it was initially passed in 2021. Before the bill made it to congress, Congressman Grijalva introduced a very innovative community facing tool where all could provide feedback on the bill. He also went on a national listening tour to gain more and more feedback on this life-changing bill. He was so ahead of his time–a model public servant.

As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his achievements and the profound impact he made during his time in office. During Black History Month 2025 in partnership with the Climate Action Campaign, we had a chance to honor him as an Inaugural Awardee of the McEachin Legacy Circle–a namesake belonging to his dear former colleague and friend in the movement Congressman Donald McEachin. What an incredibly timely recognition.

His work will continue to inspire us as we carry forward the legacy of the fight for a just, free, and equal nation he so passionately championed.

“The passing of Congressman Raul Grijalva is a profound loss for the environmental justice movement and for all those who have fought tirelessly for a more equitable and sustainable future. Just like his colleague, the late Congressman McEachin, Congressman Grijalva  was a steadfast champion for communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis, and his unwavering commitment to protecting our planet and uplifting the voices of the marginalized will be deeply missed. He loved young leaders, and I can proudly say he has inspired my generation and those after me to maintain the legacy to fight for environmental justice for all. May he rest well with the ancestors.”–LaTricea D. Adams, MAT, EdS, CEO & President, Young, Gifted & Green

Our thoughts and prayers are with Congressman Grijalva’s family, friends, and all those who were touched by his kindness and leadership. Let us honor his memory by committing ourselves to the causes he championed and striving to create a more just and equitable America for all.
