Dear U.S. Senate: Don’t Let This Old White Man Mess Up A Good Thang

A Proper Read of Senator Joe Manchin

White allies, please collect ya boy Manchin! It literally makes no sense in the year of our Lord 2021 we should have to beg for money to save ourselves from either burning alive from extreme heat or drowning to death from extreme flooding. We went from the wildfires in Cali to marine life literally boiling to death in the Pacific Northwest, to random tornados IN DECEMBER in places like Arkansas and Kentucky, to massive flooding in the Detroit area. Like, what more proof is needed?

The most gut-wrenching thing about Senator Joe Manchin’s insidious announcement on Fox News denouncing the Build Back Better Act, is how he straight up played his own damn people…the entire democratic party! In the words of the late Young Dolph:

Keep it real with your dog no matter what. PREACH! Same [expletive] that claim [s]he love you, [s]he’ll set you up. PREACH!

We know that old white men stay clout chasing and romanticizing manifest destiny and whatnot, but how did America let this particular white man get all this power? Organizations like Black Millennials 4 Flint have been working days, weeks, and months rallying behind the Build Back Better Act and then BOOM…another old white dude strikes again and with a big “O” on his chest for “Obstructionist”. Joe Manchin’s opposition to the Build Back Better Act is an unnecessary power move grounded in corporate greed, white supremacy, and complete inhumanity.

Keep It Real With Your Dog No Matter What

It is no secret that this West Virginian legislator is pretty cozy with the coal industry, but Manchin’s shocking denouncing of the Build Back Better Act also ruffled the feathers of United Mine Workers of America, who CNN Business quoted as being “near and dear” to Manchin’s heart. One of the golden ticket items in the Build Back Better Act is “the potential for tax incentives to encourage manufacturers to build facilities in coalfields, employing thousands of coal miners who are out of work” [Source]. Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mine Workers of America stated, “We urge Senator Manchin to revisit his opposition to this legislation and work with his colleagues to pass something that will help keep coal miners working, and have a meaningful impact on our members, their families and their communities.” Listen, friend Cecil Roberts is not about this obstructionist life, OKAY! Bay-BEY, he came back with some more smoke for the whole U.S. Senate and said, “Anti-democracy legislators and their allies are working every day to roll back the right to vote in America. Failure by the Senate to stand up to that is unacceptable and a dereliction of their duty to the Constitution” [Source]. Cecil Roberts did NOT come here to play and neither did sis Pramila Jayapal, Progressive Caucus Chair for the U.S. House of Representatives.

While our good sis, House Majority Chair Nancy Pelosi kept it cute in her response to Manchin’s foolery, Rep. Jayapal WAS NOT HAVING IT! Rep. Pramila Jayapal came straight at Manchin with absolutely no chaser telling him directly that he “lacks integrity” for completely going back on his word to not just his political party…not just POTUS, but his constituents in West Virginia. But, let’s be clear, Rep. Pramila Jayapal did not spare any scrutiny against the White House for pushing the split of the Build Back Better Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, which she as well as freshman Rep. Cori Bush believe gave way to a stalled vote, and even worse, with Manchin’s recent stance, the possibility of a dead bill.

We Just Looked At Our Wrist…We Got Time Today

Failing to pass the Build Back Better Act is not an option. Period. The work on the Build Back Better Act (BBBA) is not done. We’re counting on the Senate to pass this historic bill and its climate investments as soon as possible in the new year (**rollseyes** because it’s STILL way too late). Here is just a short, non-exhaustive list of what’s at stake if the US Senate won’t get Manchin together and get this bill passed ASAP:

  • The BBBA includes the most significant investments in climate and clean energy, ever.
  • This major legislation will put the U.S. on the path to cutting our climate pollution in half by 2030, invest directly in communities of color too often left behind, and create good-paying union jobs.
  • Scientists have been warning us for years that extreme weather is going to become more frequent and more severe. We’re living it in real time now. This past summer alone, 1 in 3 Americans personally suffered the impacts of climate change in the form of wildfires, drought, extreme storms, and flooding.
  • The climate investments in the BBBA could total more than $550 billion – investments that will protect our environment and economy by cutting the carbon pollution that drives climate change. The BBBA would also create tangible benefits for families and communities, including:
  • Convert more than 60,000 diesel school buses to electric buses
  • Make electric vehicles (EVs) more affordable for working and middle class families by cutting the price of EVs by $12,500
  • Build a half million EV charging stations across the country
  • Create more than 150,000 family-sustaining jobs through clean energy development and investments
  • Enable more than 60,000 farmers to switch to renewable energy
  • Invest in clean energy expansion to help families save an average of $500 a year in utility bills; and
  • More than double the speed of wind and solar power expansion.
  • Give the Biden administration the tools they need to meet the climate test and achieve 50 to 52 percent reductions of carbon pollution by 2030.

We cannot afford to delay climate action and environmental justice, and we need every single member of the U.S. Senate to put your flags…opps…we mean parties aside, and take the necessary steps to halt climate change in its tracks, transition rapidly to clean energy, and make our country healthier and more prosperous for all communities. We need to quickly get this bill passed in the Senate and across President Biden’s desk so he can sign it into law.

And Joe Manchin…
